"Big Up"
Well, here's some unique background info: I missed the last mix release date for Groovelectric
and for
Podrunner because I was sick. The unique part is that I was sick because I sang "
Tom Traubert's Blues" in my dead-on Tom Waits imitation and pretty much plumber-snaked my throat, which got infected and left me ill and mildly feverish for about 10 days. I've become convinced that I'm going to die some incrediby stupid way like this. Oh, well.
In any case,
because I'd been sick, I wanted a big honkin' feel-good Prog mix, and my goodness me, I think that's what I got here. IT's always a good time for a big ol' uplifting mix, right?
Except for deliberate callbacks to classic dance tracks, I usually try to be pretty current in my playlists. This time, though, the tracks were released anywhere from a few weeks ago to 2009 (Kaskade & Deadmau5! Yay!). I think the specific musical flavor I had in mind made me cast a wider net for the tracks I was looking for.
It's always fascinating to reckon with the fact that a particular mix sometimes has its own rules. Even though that's consistent with my experience creating pretty much anything, whether it's a
novel or a
customized katana, it's still kind of amazing to confront the notion that the thing being created is calling the shots, and not you. No doubt that's just externalizing, sublimating, compartmentalizing, or somesuch, but that's still how it feels. Weirdly, I take it not as a sign that I don't have control, but that things are going as they should.
